What are General Practice Networks?
Divisions of General Practice and General Practice Networks are funded by the Commonwealth and State Governments to support general practice to provide primary care services to the community and to achieve improved health outcomes in priority health areas.
The organisations undertake a number of activities including:
- Supporting practices with information, building practice capacity in areas such as workforce, IT and management systems, developing a population health focus and improving quality systems
- Linking with other health services to improve cooperation and integration
- Workforce planning and improving access to GP services
- Collecting data for policy, program and service development, as well as supporting research and evaluation
- Identifying health needs and planning to address these through primary care
- Facilitating community access to services
The first Divisions were established in 1993 and there are currently 111 Divisions across Australia. There are 14 Divisions in South Australia, 5 urban and 9 rural.
